Being grounded in medicine which is a scientific subject, Dr Goh has another side of him which is a love for art. Art is a form of stress relief and allows him the freedom of expression without rigidity.
Dr Goh has never had formal art lessons and believes that “Art is in everybody, the way you dress, how you write, the way you arrange your furniture that way”. Since young, he has been dabbling with different mediums. Dr Goh started painting in oils since 1990 when he chanced upon a box of oil paints in the house belonging to his wife and has not looked back since. He paints mainly in oil now as the bold, vibrant paint brings out the complexity of emotions.
Starting with a piece of empty canvas, the artist communicates through sight and not speech. Art allows Dr Goh to transmit his perception onto the canvas. Most of his paintings have a message, sometimes about society, sometimes about politics but sometimes he just captures a beautiful scene while has moves him. Dr Goh’s painting – “Dream of the Warrior” earned him a certificate of merit from the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards in 1997 and was also featured on the cover of the Jan 2005 issue of the Annals Academy of Medicine
His own paintings adorn the walls in his home and his wish is to retire as an artist one day!
