Obstructive Sleep Apnea | Radiofrequency (RF)Treatment

Radiofrequency (RF) Soft Tissue Reduction Technique
Radiofrequency (RF) soft tissue reduction technique is an innovative office-based procedure performed under local anesthesia to treat upper-airway obstructions. Many medical studies have demonstrated that RF, through reduction of excess tissue volume, can effectively treat obstructive sleep apnea caused by nasal obstruction, soft palate laxity or a large tongue bulk. Using specialized applicators, the surgeon delivers controlled, low-power radiofrequency energy to create limited zones of thermal lesions beneath the surface of the tissue. Over a period of 6 to 8 weeks, the lesions are naturally resorbed, reducing tissue volume and stiffening remaining tissue in the desired area. The result is soft tissue volume reduction and resolution of airway obstruction. Typically, more than one treatment is necessary to achieve optimal results.

The 15 minute procedure takes place under local anesthesia with patients typically resuming normal activities the following day.

RF treatment of Nasal Turbinates

Reducing chronic nasal obstruction
Chronic enlargement of nasal turbinates (soft tissue in our nose) affects over 1.5 billion people worldwide and is often irreversible except through surgical intervention. RF treatment of the nasal turbinates eliminates or significantly reduces patients' dependence on nasal medications. This almost painless technique is effective for patients with nasal obstruction caused by soft tissue congestion. Associated nasal bone deformities are best treated with conventional nasal septum surgery.

Nasal breathing restoration
  • Improved breathing in 100% of participants
  • Decreased degree and frequency of nasal obstruction- 80%
  • Decreased sleep disturbance and more refreshed in the mornings
  • Minimal adverse effects-occasional bleeding, crusting, dryness
  • Full clinical benefits within 4 weeks

Radiofrequency (RF) Soft Tissue Reduction Technique

Quieting habitual snoring

It is estimated that over millions of people worldwide are affected by habitual snoring. This is the result of narrowing and obstruction of the upper airway due to a large and floppy soft palate and uvula located at the back of the throat. RF treatment of the soft palate is a relatively painless and minimally invasive method to treat habitual snoring.

Snoring eradication
  • A survey by Dr Goh of patients who underwent only 1 RF treatment of the soft palate shows satisfaction rate of 70% after 6 months. Other studies show that this technique reduces mean snoring index by 60.6%
